Choose a Mentor who Cares about You and Your Business

One year ago this past September I was an emotional wreck. Personally, my family had gone through another major health issue, extended family concerns and two car accidents that occurred within one week. My business was failing. My private therapy practice was so private that I did not have any clients. I received notice that the building my office was in was being sold. I needed to make a decision about moving or staying. Perhaps this was a sign telling me to quit this foolishness. Perhaps I was never meant to own a business.

I started the private practice as a way to supplement our income, but it has only taken money from our personal income. I thought I would be savvy and create an online presence. People are making money online, aren’t they? I had spent hours and hours and hours trying to generate income through the practice and online. I had clearly failed or so I thought.

I did one thing right. I connected with LaShanda Henry of SistaSense. LaShanda teaches her clients to “make sense of making money online.” Some may call her a coach, she is definitely my mentor.

LaShanda offers clarity calls to members of her SistaSense Power Circle. These 30 minute calls clarify the actions that you need to take to power your business forward. She wastes no time identifying the pressing concern and outlining the actions in a bullet, 1-2-3 fashion.

I had been a part of her power circle for a couple of years and had learned so much about entrepreneurship, promotion and online business. My problem was focus and execution. I thought I knew more than I actually did. If you think you want to be an entrepreneur, you need to do your research. One year ago, I had reached my limit and was tired emotionally and mentally. I was ready to quit.

I started my clarity call with LaShanda by saying “too much is going on, I think I need to just quit.” The 30 minutes turned into 1 ½ hours. I talked and cried; my heart broken and my spirit overwhelmed. She listened with kindness, acceptance and no judgement. She never attempted to dissuade me or influence my decision either way. She allowed me to vent my feelings. Every word expressed the anger, frustration and fear I felt. LaShanda put aside business and treated me like a friend.

LaShanda scheduled another call with me the following week. That call also lasted 1 ½ hours. She continued to listen with curiosity. By that time, my frustration was turning into inspiration and I was feeling hopeful. LaShanda skillfully gave me several call to action items to work on before out next clarity call.

She continued to lay out action items that I followed diligently. Within a month, my business ventures began to turn around for the better. I found new office space that was closer to my home, better priced and much nicer. I moved on an idea to create a space for “hardworking professionals who want to be happy.” My private therapy practice is at the level I want. I am now paying myself on a monthly basis.

One year ago, I was ready to quit and would have missed my blessing had I not listened to LaShanda Henry. She always tells me “Marcyline you always push through.” I pushed through because I had someone who had gone through similar trials and shared the wisdom she gained from the experience.

Mentorship is truly key to a successful social work career. Everyone who is successful, whether they admit it or not, had a mentor to advize them and help them along the way. Thanks for sharing this incredible story of resilience. Everyone has a story and it takes courage to tell it.
