Treat Every Work Day Like New Year’s Day

Happy New Year 2017,3D Rendering

If you are a service professional, chances are that you have worked on a holiday. You may be reading this while you are at work today. New Year’s Day for service professionals is a day unlike most others. You are taken away from your family to make sure that others are safe, healthy or whole. It is a sacrifice and you do your work with the utmost dedication, commitment and devotion.

We are blessed to have social workers, who rush to an emergency room to assist a family through their holiday tragedy. We are equally blessed to have social workers who stop eating dinner to talk a depressed client through a moment of holiday despair. We cannot overlook the social worker who spends their New Year’s ministering to those who are homeless.

Your work is valuable to the people you serve and to the community. I am a social worker and I know that it does not always feel as if the work or sacrifice is valued. It may feel as if you are invisible just like some of the people you serve.

I want to encourage each of you to meet the challenges of the days to come as if each day is New Year’s Day. Begin each day with:

Hope – that your work will touch someone in a positive way
That your efforts will bring lasting results
Belief – in the basic goodness of people
The hardest exterior often protects the softest interior
Love – because it is more powerful than hate
Celebration – life is precious
It is a privilege to know the deepest secrets and hold them close

Social workers have everything they need to treat every work day like it is New Year’s Day. “Be not weary in well doing for in due season ye shall reap if ye faint not.”
