My mentor LaShanda Henry founder of SistaSense asked who my female business crush was these days. I had to admit that I am digging Deona Hooper. Ms. Hooper is the founder of Social Work Helper Online Magazine. I am sure others would name Oprah Winfrey, Wendy Williams, or other high profile successful women, but I am a major fan of Ms. Hooper.
A year or two ago, I contacted her with a business question. I needed advice regarding a situation that hit me unexpectedly. She answered me immediately and engaged in a succinct and helpful conversation. She is a leader in our profession and she took the time to advise a colleague she had never met. That is impressive and yes, that is the social work way. Now I want to meet her. I would enjoy meeting and talking with her.
We get a glimpse of her passion for social work and the ability of the social work profession to make a positive impact on the world via her online magazine. We also experience her vision and belief in the foundational tenets of social work. We also see the power of a successfully run magazine and business.

Social Work Helper provides current information and resources to social workers in the form articles. I believe, however that it is a conduit for much more.
I believe that Social Work Helper is a digitized revolution of social workers lead by Deona Hooper, MSW the website’s Founder and Editor-in-Chief. It provides a medium for social workers and social service providers to tell it the way they feel it, see it, and experience it. The most impressive feature of Social Work Helper, to me, is the voice that it provides to colleagues.
Colleagues have an opportunity to help each other by sharing experiences and knowledge in the areas of self-care, career advancement, and education, to name a few. Colleagues also encourage each other to move past their comfort zones to influence positive change in the communities in which they work and live.
Articles fall into a broad range of categories. The articles educate, inform and provide awareness regarding the needs of community members. The articles also share innovations, knowledge and trends that influence or will influence services and service delivery.
