Researchers at Penn State University found that 75% of shares on Facebook were made without the user clicking through to read the content. This is poignant given that so many people receive “news” from social media. The study appeared in the journal Nature Human Behavior in November 2024. Other research studies have found similar results. Many on social media appear to receive their “news” from the headlines only.
Headlines and small narrative blurbs are created using principles of psychology to attract and engage readers. Unfortunately, headlines can be misleading and can evoke emotions which can create stress and increase anxiety.
