A Confidence Boosting Book for Social Workers

September 6 is National Read a Book Day. Two summers ago, I read a book that changed my way of thinking. I read You are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero.

The title of the book caught my attention. Only someone with a bold way of thinking or a serious set of balls would use the word ‘badass’ in a book title. Now, many authors are using eyebrow raising words to grab readers’ attention.

The content in Jen’s book is as ‘badass’ as the title.

When I came across You are A Badass, I was looking for a way to build confidence as an entrepreneur. My business was struggling. Lacking focus, I tried to do too many things at once. I was confused and potential customers were confused.

I lacked confidence and had an overabundance of stress.

Jen’s delivery resonated with me. I felt like she was talking directly to me. Really! I felt like we were sitting together having a latte. She and I were girlfriends chatting. Jen is like the girlfriend who has no problem telling you to get your butt in gear so you can do what you need to do. Every woman should have a girlfriend like that, with or without the cussing.

I learned that I sabotaged myself in several powerful ways. The first booby-trap was found in my faulty core beliefs about myself. Second, I lacked clarity of purpose. Finally, the third booby-trap was failing to act due to fear. All these things increased stress.

No one can read this book once and put it on the shelf. It must be read repeatedly to move the needle. The nuggets and activities are invaluable and worth remembering. For example, in Chapter 11 entitled Your Brain is Your Bitch,

Jen gives a power packed list of action steps. She believes in having faith in a higher power. This shows in her action steps.

Ask and Receive

We must ask for what we want from our higher power or spirit guide. Once we ask, we must then make room to receive it.

Fake it Until You Make It

Some would refer to this as ‘walking in faith.’ Others would say to get ready and act as if your desire has already manifested in your life. It may not be visible yet but act as if it is on its way. Look, dress, and live the part. Your surroundings should also be ready to receive your desire. No one puts new wine in old bottles. Do they?

Make A Vision Board

Vision boards remind us of our dreams and desires. Put together a board and look at it often. We believe what we constantly see, hear, think, and feel. Allow your vision board to remind you where you are going.

Surround Yourself with People Who Think the Way You Want to Think

Elevate your mind by hanging out with people who have the mindset that you want. Do you live in an area where you cannot find those people? Read about people you admire. Listen to their podcasts or watch interviews with them.

Love Yourself

Jen ends every chapter with this reminder.

This book helped me gain the confidence I needed to move to the next steps. It also reminded me to take care of myself in ways that lowered my stress levels.

Poor self-confidence leads us to question our own abilities, knowledge, and skills. This prevents us from taking chances and meeting daily challenges. A confident person trusts that they have the abilities, knowledge, and skills to meet the challenges they may face. They are also motivated to pursue the dreams they have for their lives.

So, if poor self-confidence is a concern, read You are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life by Jen Sincero.
