Talking Sleep with Working Moms

I am talking to my peers, working moms, this week. Falling asleep can be a chore especially when you have a multitude of thoughts running non-stop through your head. I can lie down, tired and ready to go to sleep and then it happens. Like soldiers, thoughts of work, things I need to remember, and things I had forgotten march through my mind. It is frustrating. Oh yes, the frustration triggers a stress response and that wakes me up even more.

I enjoy sleep and struggle when I do not get the sleep that I need. So, I knew that I needed to come up with a solution that worked for me. I started paying more attention to my actions and activities prior to going to bed. I learned that my actions either caused me to fall asleep quickly or kept me up. I learned that having a consistent bedtime routine allows me to consistently fall asleep in less than 30 minutes.

The following is a quote from Sleep.org article “How Long Should it Take You to Fall Asleep?”

“It’s normal to take 10 to 20 minutes to fall asleep once you climb into bed (this is called sleep latency.) If it takes more or less time than that, then your body may be trying to tell you something.”

I share what I learned about developing a bedtime routine in the Happy People Sleep Well 7 Day Challenge. This challenge is an activity related to “S” step in my R.E.S.T System of Stress Relief. The “S” stands for sleep. I invite you to join the challenge and tell me how it works for you.
